DeChambeau dismisses 3D-printed iron query after Masters mishaps
Bryson DeChambeau, the two-time U.S. Open champion, shot 4-over-par 76 in the first round of the Masters on Thursday at Augusta National. His day included striking a patron with a tee shot on the sixth hole and taking three bunker shots on the 11th. In the post-round media session, he brushed off a question about producing another 3D-printed 5-iron.
DeChambeau explained the club-building process takes about a day and a half and requires USGA conformance approval. "Pfft, no. It has to be USGA-conforming. There's a whole process you have to go through," he said. The iron, which he designed himself, saw use just once during the round.
DeChambeau emphasized his innovative approach to equipment. "There's this nature that I have about myself where innovation is a habit of mine, and I really find and take pride in that ability to learn — even through failure," he told ESPN. He added, "We'll see where it goes. We'll see where it takes me. All I could say now is, if I don't put them in the bag, it's my fault now."
Last year, DeChambeau played in the final group at the Masters with winner Rory McIlroy and defeated him in a pairing during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. His 76 score on April 9, 2026, left him at risk of missing the cut after entering with the second-best odds behind Scottie Scheffler.
