Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Melvin Foster, a former standout linebacker for the Iowa Hawkeyes, has died at age 59, according to an online obituary cited by Fox News Digital and confirmed by an official statement from Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.[1][2]
Sheriff Gonzalez announced Foster's "recent and unexpected passing" on X (formerly Twitter) on October 15, 2024, describing him as "an incredible man and public servant" who served Harris County for almost 15 years.[1] Foster worked as a deputy and field training officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Foster, a Jack Yates High School graduate from Houston (class of 1986), helped his team win the Texas Class 5A state championship in 1985 and earned USA Today All-American and All-State honors.[1]
At the University of Iowa from 1987 to 1990, Foster played linebacker for the Hawkeyes. As a junior in 1989, he recorded 68 tackles. In his senior season of 1990, he led the team with 106 tackles as Iowa won the Big Ten Conference championship and advanced to the Rose Bowl, where they lost 46-34 to Washington on January 1, 1991.[1][3]
He had a brief stint as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in 1992.[1] Foster was inducted into the Harris County High School Athletics Hall of Fame.
Gonzalez noted Foster's legacy as "an impactful leader and beloved by his teammates," extending condolences to his family.[1]
